Ferry Meadows To Alwalton, via Milton Ferry Bridge.

General Information: Starts and finishes at the Ferry Meadows Visitors Centre.
This walk joins the river at the beautiful Milton Ferry Bridge and then follows the river through beautiful countryside up to Alwalton Lock. We then go through Alwalton and head back to Ferry Meadows on the other side of the river, down a long, gentle slope.

Look out for the red information along the route for places of interest and stops for refreshments.

  • 1 Starting at the Visitor Centre (X) turn left.

  • 2 At this signpost, bear right.

  • 3 When you reach this bridge, go over it and turn right towards the Pontoon Bridge.

  • 4 Cross over the Pontoon Bridge, and then turn left.

  • 5 Bear right here and follow this path all the way to Milton Ferry Bridge.

  • 6 Cross over Milton Ferry bridge and turn left into the meadow.

  • 7 Follow this path until you reach the railway line, then go up and over to the other side.
This river path is about 1 mile/3 km long and eventually bears right

  • 8 When you reach the next bridge, go over it and then bear right again.

  • 9 Alwalton Lock will soon come into view.  Cross over it and head for the (X)

This path takes you past the site of the old Alwalton MIll (X)

Follow this path over the little bridge and through the gates in front of you.


  • 10 Go up the very steep hill and follow it until you reach this Alwalton junction.

From here, you can either turn right into the village for refreshments...

Just outside the village, if you turn left onto Oundle Road, it's just a 5 minute walk to the  East of England Arena and Marriott Hotel roundabout where you'll find:

...or bear left and follow this path back down to the river.

  • 11 When you reach this point, you can either go rightup the steps, and turn left at the top. Or go straight on and follow the lower river path (which can be challenging in the winter months).
 Both paths lead to the railway bridge by Chesterton Riding Stables. 


  • 12 Go over this bridge and then turn right.


  • 13 From here, you can either follow the path along the road that leads back to Ferry Meadows Visitors Centre and Car Park, or the pretty path along the rail track that takes you past the Caravan Site and back up to the main road, where you take a left turn back to the Visitors Centre.
